Life with the Sees: Chapter 14--Bitter Cold
It’s been bitterly cold here in Nebraska—record breaking in fact. In January, we received 13 inches on top of 4 inches. It just kept snowing! I’d never seen so much snow fall at one time. While a bit excessive, the snow did give Garrett and I a couple of snow days at home. I was grateful to not have to go drive in the snow and was even more grateful for those who worked so hard to clear the snow from roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.
Garrett and I went on a nice, brisk walk to explore the snowy wonderland on our local trails. The snow blanketed everything in brilliant white and it all seemed to sparkle.
A week or so later, it snowed another 10 inches. While we don’t quite have 27 inches of snow on the ground due to some warmer days, the snow is most assuredly still there and still deep. We found that out when we went to our favorite park—Pioneer Park—to have a bit of an adventure. The snow drifts were to my knees! While we were cold after our jaunt, it was much fun. I do recommend wearing appropriate socks, though. Garrett said my southern was showing by choosing thin socks with my winter boots.
I think more astonishing than all the snow, was the cold front that we have now. I don’t know that it has gotten above 10 degrees this week, and we are expecting a high of -2 in a few days! Single digits is a whole new level of cold. There’s even frost and ice inside my windows (and yes my heater is on).
All in all, I really don’t mind the winter weather. I love that the snow covers all of the brown, dead grass. My largest complaint is having to clear off 14 inches of snow on our cars and trying to keep my floors clean with all the salt we track in.
This may be our last winter in Nebraska, so I guess it is really showing off for us.
